Maximize and Maintain your Pc Performance With Reg Organizer

When you click on an icon to start a Web browser or an office application, does it start as fast as it used to when you just bought your new PC?

It is an almost inevitable natural process that, with time, your computer does not run as fast as it used to. More and more unneeded information slows down your PC's performance. Traces are left when you install and remove software. While you can usually remove most files that are left over when a product is just removed, what about the invisible traces that are left in your computer's registry?

Every Windows application uses the registry to store its configuration data. Many products do not remove the data completely, which results in residual information abandoned in the Windows registry. One or two or even three programs won't harm your registry enough to significantly slow down your computer. If, however, you use your computer for months and years, the registry becomes bloated with these residuals. This, in turn, causes major slowdowns in your PC's operation.

What would you do to stop that from happening? Limiting the number of programs you download and install is one option, but also an inconvenience. Reinstalling Windows from scratch is another option that will, for a while, restore your computer's original speed. But how much time are you going to waste reinstalling and reconfiguring Windows and all the applications you are so used to? Probably so much time that you'll decide not to bother.

Luckily, there is a solution that does not require such drastic measures. Reg Organizer by chemtable software will restore your PC's performance to its original level by thoroughly scanning your Windows registry, cleaning up abandoned registry keys and automatically fixing any problems and issues that your computer can acquire over time. Run Reg Organizer regularly, and your computer will stay as healthy and as fast as it was on day one!

While Reg Organizer's fully automatic mode is great, the product offers much more than just that. After all, there are many so-called 'registry cleaners', why bother with another one? Unlike the competition, Reg Organizer has many registry tweaks and tricks to allow advanced computer users to gain better control over their PC.

Reg Organizer allows you to locate and take care of all information that belongs to a specific application, even if it has been uninstalled. Get safer registry imports by allowing Reg Organizer to handle such requests; you will see clearly, in tree-like form, exactly what keys are about to be imported when you click on a .reg file. This is a feature that really should have been a part of Windows by this time!

Finally, you can set up Reg Organizer to track all changes made by software that you install or uninstall. Keep your PC pristine clean by effectively and completely removing all residual traces of information when you uninstall an application! Download your free copy for evaluation at:

Microsoft or not?

Friday was another repeat, this time from May 15, 2006. However, TCR does not want to leave you empty handed and is bringing you an article by one of our staff members, Paul ( www.tiglo.co.uk ). Although Paul is from the UK, he takes a keen interest in reading about Jim Cramer's Mad Money (and of course at the best JCMM site on the 'Net - www.thecramerreport.com !) and hopes you will enjoy his insight into one of Jim's opinions.

Cramer is currently favouring a buy into Microsoft (MSFT), believing the bad times are behind and it's back on the up. An analysis of the share prices over the past few months shows that Microsoft is over its lowest points ($21.51) and gradually climbing (currently $24.40). One could argue that Cramer is right.

However, continued changes in Vista's release date, even if it means a more stable and secure Operating System will be released (or that is the theory). Microsoft's OS and webbrowser cycle is poor as it is:

* Windows XP was released in 2001

* Internet Explorer was released in 2001

Internet Explorer 7 is set for release in the first half of 2007 and Windows Vista is set for general release in the first quarter of 2007. Both products will offer many improvements and new features over the older versions but the reality is very little of it is new.

One feature to finally reach Internet Explorer is tabbed browser. To a non-technical person, who just uses what's supplied on their MS Windows desktop, this may seem new and exciting, however tabbed browser has been around since 1996 (although it was a feature in a non-public beta version of InternetWorks since 1994) and has been available in popular browsers such as Opera and MozillaFirefox for several years.

Microsoft won the first browser war but now it's coming to a battle in many areas. Product cycles are quicker for open source software such as OpenOffice.org, MozillaFirefox and MozillaThunderbird - new features, bug fixes, and security updates are released regularly. Due to the products' open source nature it is easier and cheaper to develop plugins and compatible applications.

On the operating system side, Microsoft has competition from Linux. Linux is now becoming more mature and is being adopted by governments and educational institutes alike. Novell (NOVL) is investing a lot of money in Linux, having bought German company SuSE Linux GmbH in January 2004.

One key area that they have invested a lot in over the past year is Xen, which is virtualisation software and allows multiple Operating Systems (Linux or Windows) to be run as guests on a single system (the host, which can be either Linux or Windows). This is one threat Microsoft has seen and responded to by improving its Virtual Server support offering and making it available for free. However, is this too little too late?

Xen's benefit is that it's open source, therefore bugs and security issues will be fixed quicker, possibly even before the problem is public knowledge, as the source code is visible for everyone to evaluate and test for insecurities. A quick response to bugs and security is critical in a business environment and an area Microsoft can not compete within due to its closed source nature.

Virtualisation is becoming a more important area due to the increasing costs for power. Fortunately, hardware is becoming more powerful, often more powerful than is actually required, so virtualisation is definitely for today as well as the future. Why invest in hardware for 6 servers when all 6 could run from within one operating system through virtualisation?

With Vista and Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft is trying to play catch-up, but the fact is it now has seriously tough competition. There is now a big take up of alternative browsers, office applications and operating systems. While the market change might be slow, it's definitely happening. I cannot see Microsoft being in the same market position in 10 years that it is now. Its market share will continue to evaporate.

The Bottom Line:

Microsoft is facing serious threats in the home, education and business desktop arena. It's facing threats in the business environment as a server (aside from as a webserver, where Linux/Unix is in the majority). Microsoft might hit a high when Vista is (finally) released, however Bill Gates stepping down in the way that he is does suggest to me that the bulk of the money has been made and it's now time to do something with it. The IT industry is often a "come today, gone tomorrow" so it's always difficult to choose which company to invest in, especially as the current trend is "over priced " when those companies that have managed to stick around decide to float themselves on the stock market. I won't advise you who to invest in, but I will say don't just look at the software/operating system area, also look at hardware and consultancy companies too. Big Blue, International Business Machines Corp (IBM), has been around for a long time and there will always be a demand for such companies.

Creating Web Graphics with Adobe FireWorks

Adobe FireWorks - Just how good is it for web designers?

Accelerate web design and development with Adobe® Fireworks® software, the ideal tool for creating and optimizing images for the web and rapidly prototyping websites. Like it’s new step-brother, PhotoShop, FireWorks is a superb piece of graphics software that no web designer should be without. Similar to PhotoShop, in that it has the same intuitive workspace and a huge support network through online forums and support sites, FireWorks is specifically optimised for web graphics and for web design. Fireworks offers the flexibility to edit both vector and bitmap images, a common library of prebuilt assets, and timesaving integration with Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Flash software.

Designers can mock up designs quickly in Fireworks, or leverage other assets from Illustrator, Photoshop, and Flash. Then move directly into Dreamweaver for easy development and deployment. The interface includes a comprehensive set of design tools, including styles, blend modes, filters and auto shapes. Web designers can choose from dozens of styles to quickly change the aesthetics of any object. Options include chrome, stone, ice, reflective, glass, plastic, and more. There are also dozens of lend modes to customize the appearance of your objects and interface elements; a plethora of lighting effects, shadow effects, styles, and blend modes (including seven new blend modes from Photoshop), to add depth and character to text and symbols. Optimize graphics for virtually any delivery scenario with preview, cross-platform gamma preview, selective JPEG compression, and a wide range of export controls, and then cleverly splice them for the web or CSS with the 9-slice scaling function. A great new feature in the CS3 version of Fireworks is the ability to create multiple web pages at once. Designers can use the new Pages panel to create multiple pages in a single document (PNG file), and share layers across multiple pages.

Each page can contain its own slices, layers, frames, animations, and canvas settings, making it easy to simulate website flow in a prototype. Added to that, the new multi-layer support allows users to include multiple web layers within a single Fireworks (PNG) file, share a common web layer across all pages, or be selective about which pages include the web layer. Designers can also edit a single layer and then apply the change globally – saving loads of time. There’s better integration with Illustrator in CS3, as well as enhanced integration between other Adobe products, including PhotoShop and DreamWeaver. This helps to make the whole web design, development and graphic construction as seamless as possible. In all, FireWorks is a fantastic design tool for all web developers and designers. Anyone even thinking of web design should download the free trial and have a play.
I guarantee you won’t be disappointed! You can check out some of the graphics that can be created with Adobe FireWorks for web design at the DataMouse site.

Creating Web Graphics with Adobe PhotoShop

USing Adobe PhotoShop from a web designer point of view.

Adobe® Photoshop® software helps to improve the workflow path from imagination to imagery. Ideal for photographers, graphic designers, and web designers, software delivers features such as automatic layer alignment and blending that enable advanced compositing. Although we shall cover some other graphics packages, such as FireWorks, in other articles, when creating images for the web, there are few tools that compare with PhotoShop and its diverse range of web design-specific tools.

Web designers can create or modify images with a wide assortment of professional, fully customizable paint settings, artistic brushes, and drawing tools. When this is combined with an intuitive workspace and the ability to import and export a wide range of file formats, including PSD, BMP, Cineon, JPEG, JPEG2000, OpenEXR, PNG, Targa, and TIFF, PhotoShop is one tool that today’s web graphic designers should not be without. The colour palette, for example, can be optimised specifically for web-safe colours. Web designers can also undo and redo any set of editing steps in an open image with the History palette, and automatically track all editing steps within your files with the Edit History log.

Export steps to a text file or save them as part of image metadata for easier documentation of your work, file audits, and more. This makes managing specific icon palettes much, much easier in PhotoShop. Being able to create an image across multiple layers and then splice that image into specific segments ready for use with Cascading Style Sheets makes it easier for web developers to become web designers. Cutting a base image into segments and using CSS can create superbly styled and visually impressive websites very easily. Combined with DreamWeaver and the new integration tools available between the two software packages, both web design and web development just became even more seamless.

If you create custom icons and web graphics – as opposed to web banners et al – you will usually have a common theme across your icons. For example, orientation, palette colour or sizes. With PhotoShop, you can automate common production tasks in a variety of ways. Set up event-based scripts, record a series of steps as an Action for efficient batch processing, and design repetitive graphics faster with Variables. Being long established as the software of choice for web designers, PhotoShop has a massive on-line following. Forums and support sites are in abundance, with over 113 million web pages available when searching for PhotoShop information! Whether you’re creating fun web graphics with comic styling and bright colours, realistic images for printed portfolios or vector graphics for scaling, PhotoShop is the perfect software. You can check out some of the graphics that can be created with Adobe PhotoShop for web design at the DataMouse site.

Web 2.0 Making a Difference on the Internet

Blogs, wiki's, ease of use, participation, usability, recommendation, social software, simplicity, audio ,video, IM, design, AJAX, convergence, CSS, mobility, open API's, RSS, web standards, search engine optimization, XHTML, micro formats, standardisation & many more new technologies.

If you use all or some of these features in a website, you will find yourself in second generation of World Wide Web. Yes, Web 2.0 is making a difference by adding various advanced functionality. The term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, however it does not refer to an update to Web technical specifications, but to changes in the way system developers are using the web platform. We can say that Web 2.0 is an improved form of World Wide Web.
Before RSS which is one of the most widely used feature of Web 2.0, several similar formats already existed for syndication, but none achieved widespread popularity or are still in common use today, as most were envisioned to work only with a single service. These originated from push and pull technologies.

The specifications & features of Web 2.0 include server-software, content-syndication, messaging-protocols, standards-based browsers with plug-ins and extensions and various client-applications. Innovations of Web 2.0 are web based applications and desktops, rich Internet applications, client side software, XML & RSS, specialized protocols & web protocols. All these new features, specification & innovations are taking the Internet and web design to next generation.

There is undoubtedly a significant degree of hype around Web 2.0 at the moment, but behind the hyperbole lie some important principles, and some powerful potential. We are seeing the emergence of Web-based services that pull data from a wide range of back-end systems to deliver value to users, when, where and in the form that they require it. We are seeing adhoc relationships being formed by and for these services at the point of need, rather than the costly and time-consuming human creation of contracts or service level agreements. Previously passive recipients of content are beginning to engage, combine and recombine data that they are given in new and interesting ways.

The Web 2.0 has also made easy for website design & use but the world is all about change & its pretty acceptable question. If Web 2.0 supports that many new features, what’s next after Web 2.0? May be Web 3.0? Yes Web 3.0 is on its way and will arrive with many more features & functionality.

Planning Your Website

If you built a bridge without a blueprint, it would probably fall down. A website that hasn't been planned is just as likely to fail. Ensuring a successful website means successful planning, explore some of our top tips that that will take you through some of the steps you need to take in order to ensure your site is a success.

Most websites fail. For every Google or Amazon there are thousands of sites that don't make it, so what can you do to make your website a success? The first thing you need to do to avoid failure is to define exactly what you mean by success. What do you want your website to achieve?

Before you do anything you should decide on a short, clear goal for your site and then write it down. You can just have one goal, but it sometimes helps to have a handful to help you develop your site. Possible goals may include:

  • To make enough money selling your line of hand-made jewelry to give up your day job
  • To tell everyone how great your pet hamster is
  • To sell your range of skateboards to people outside California
  • To get more parents to send their children to your school
  • To fill more rooms in your hotel during the off-season
  • To educate divers about the dangers they pose to coral reefs
  • To raise money for cancer research
  • To help people understand trigonometry

It's important that you only set a small number of goals for your site. If you try to do too many things at once, you'll fail.

Focusing On Achieving Your Goal

Your goal can help you make the right decisions when designing your website - but only if you can keep focused on it. Whenever you need to make a decision, ask yourself which of the options is most likely to help you achieve your goal.

One decision you must take for any site is how large to make the text. Small text often looks nicer, but larger text is more readable. Imagine you were designing a site for a financial advisor whose goal was to "get new customers". Would large or small text help you to achieve the goal better? Larger text would be better in this instance, as most investors are older people and many wear glasses.

But what if their goal was "to get more young customers"? Smaller text might be more likely to appeal to younger investors, although you still need to make sure they can read it.

Hot Tip: Be careful when choosing your web designer. Some designers may be more interested in creating an attractive website for their portfolio than a site that makes money for you. Having a goal written down helps make sure everyone is pulling in the same direction. Understanding Your Visitors

A website without visitors is as pointless as a pencil without lead. To make sure the people who visit your site don't leave straight away you'll need to identify your target audience, the people you want to visit your site, so you can ensure the design and content will appeal to them.

You need to know as much about your target audience as possible. Ask yourself lots of questions about them:

  • How old are they?
  • What kind of jobs do they have?
  • Where do they live?
  • What computer do they own?
  • How much do they use the Web?
  • What other sites do they visit?
  • Why have they come to your site?

The Call to Action

Once you've got a clear idea of who your target audience is, you'll need to think about how you are going to use this knowledge to achieve the goal you've set for your site. If you're planning a business site then you probably want the visitor to buy something from you, either now or in the future. If your site is non-commercial, you probably still want your visitor to do something specific, like donate money to a charity or improve their knitting.

So, how do you get your visitors to do what you want? Well, you need to ask them - and it needs to be obvious. There's no point in having a "buy now" button if your visitor doesn't notice it. Your whole site, from the design to the writing, should be focused on getting your visitors to take up your call to action. For some sites, like Amazon, the action they want the visitor to perform might be to make an online purchase, but for others it could simply be tempting the visitor to make a phone call or send an email.

Whatever your call to action is, you'll need to understand your target audience in order to get them to perform it.

Check Out the Competition

There's no such thing as an original idea any more, at least not on the Web. If you're designing a new site it's almost certain that somebody somewhere will have done something similar before.

You might not welcome this competition but try to think of it as free market research. Your competitors may have spent a lot of time and money coming up with ideas for their site and there's nothing to stop you using those ideas for free. Take a look at your competitor's websites to see what they've done well and what they've done badly.

Learn From Other People's Mistakes

If you're able to offer visitors something your competitors don't, there's a good chance they'll start using your site instead. Visit other people's sites and think like an awkward customer. What's wrong with their site? What could they do better? What are they missing?

Here are some of the things you might find:

  • Their site looks cheap so I don't trust them. A site that looks professional would make me much more likely to buy online
  • I don't have Flash, so I can't use their site
  • It takes me too long to find the books I want
  • There are lots of spelling mistakes on the site and I found the articles boring, even though it's about my favourite singer
  • The site takes a long time to load, I can't wait that long so I'll probably go to another site instead
  • I found the order forms really confusing. I'd rather call them up than buy from their website

Credit Where Credit's Due

It's probably easy to pick holes in your competition's website, but also remember to focus on the things they've done well. Imagine you're a potential customer coming to the site. Try to perform one of the "tasks" you'd want them to carry out, such as finding the company's phone number and address or buying something online.

How easy it is to carry out the task? How long did it take? What impression of the company did you get? Remember, looking at other people's websites for inspiration is a great idea. However, copying them isn't. It may be tempting to cut corners by copying the terms and conditions from another siteFind Article, but it's also against the law.

A Review of Microsoft Windows Vista

The release of Windows Vista has not been greeted with the earth shattering yells of welcome as everyone thought it would be. On the contrary, there has been a lot of grumbling and complaining. Although we cannot deny that Vista truly has its merits, it also has its downsides and inconveniences. What happened?

Microsoft actually took five years to get the Vista act together. After years of long waiting, people’s expectations either faded or grew in proportion. You would expect some fireworks If you had to wait that long, right? For some users however, especially the XP users, it was a long wait that culminated in disappointment. It is true that Vista has a new and cool user interface and a bunch of other new features. Even non-experts would agree though that Vista looks painfully like XP in a new dress. It may not be completely fair to say this but some people do say that Vista is no better than if XP got a product upgrade.

What people are tying to say is that XP has not outlived its usefulness. In those five years that people waited for Vista, XP has answered most user needs to a T. Windows XP has gained its popularity because it has proven stable and capable through the years. It may have had its bugs but it was a system that everyone was comfortable using. It’s not like a question of moving from Windows 98 to Vista, in which case, people would be fools not to. Moving from XP to Vista however is just like moving from your house to another one just across the street. People want to know if Vista can answer some brand new need that XP cannot.

We all know of course, that every new edition must have something new to offer. Microsoft would not unleash something on the market if it were to become a projected flop. Users then can expect some changes and improvements. On the aspect of security for example people can expect better software performance through its user account control, full disk encryption, anti-spyware and parental controls.

Other developments include better wireless networking capabilities and a new integrated system-wide instant search. Multi media enthusiasts would also welcome the improved Media Player, the new photo gallery and the Media Center and DVD Maker. Included in Vista’s bragging rights is the new user interface which features Aero. Who wouldn’t want to have that futuristic translucent look, those 3D flip effects and those live thumbnails and icons? The Vista user interface is both pleasing to look at and smooth to use. Then again, some people simply feel that this is just a load of frills. People want to see more useful features.

Another concern about Vista is the hardware requirements. Yes, it is true that Vista requires just a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, and 800 MHz processor and a good graphics card. These are the basic hardware specifications needed for the most basic functions of Vista to run. In reality though, you may really need one hell of a unit especially if you want to run higher editions of Vista adequately. You may realize for example that your unit may just not be able to cope with the memory demands of the software. You may run just a few programs and find out that you have no memory left.

To be fair with Vista, it is something that many users will still look forward to using. It is perhaps simply a matter of choice. The time will come when XP will eventually outlive its usefulness. Perhaps while waiting for that perfect opearating system to come along, Vista will be a good system to stick with.

Firewall Software Review - Top 10 Tips on Firewall Protection

What does a personal computer firewall do?

A personal firewallis a either a software program or hardware device that assist in screening out viruses, hackers, and worms that attempt to contaminate or enter your computer over while you surf the world wide web. If you are a small-business user or home user, utilizing a personal firewall is the one of the best valuable and important initial steps you can take to assist you in guarding your computer pathways.

One of the first rules, is to make sure your antivirus and firewall software is turned on previous to connecting to the Internet. Top Ten Tips on Firewalls

1. If your PC is not guarded when you are surfing the internet, hackers can get entry to your computer and get access to your personal data on your computer system.

2. Worms and trojans can install code on your PC that may destroy files or cause computer disruptions. Malicious software can also utilize your PC to create problems on other business and home computers that are connected to the Internet.

3. A personal firewall helps to block out many different types of malicious programs and Internet traffic prior to it reaching your system.

4. Some computer firewalls can also assist in preventing other users from using your PC to attack other systems without your approval.

5. Using a personal firewall is vital no what method you use to connect to the Internet, whether it be with a cable modem, dial-up modem, or dsl modem.

6. A computer firewall software will not make your PC or computer totally safe. However, a personal firewall provides the most helpful initial line of protection.

7. Make sure you install a personal firewall before you install any other secuirty measures, and then you can add additional security programs, such as updating your computer operating system, installing an anti virus software or antispyware software program.

8. If you have multiple computers in a small-office network or home network, you should guard all you computers with a firewall program.

9. Activating you personal firewall will help protect from the spreading of a virus program from one PC to another PC in your network if one of your PC’s becomes infected with a virus. However, it won’t block a virus once it is opened in an infected email attachment. This may cause other computer to become infected in your network as well. Make sure you have installed an anti virus software program as well on all your computers.

10. Most firewalls cannot guard against viruses that spread because of e-mail, such as Trojan horses, which impersonate as benign or helpful software and mislead you into downloading or opening them. A personal firewall cannot avert pop-up ads or spam.

A personal firewall will not protect or stop access to an unprotected wireless network. However, the network firewall helps to guard the PC’s on your network, so if an prowler were to get entrance to your network, that person could not enter your personal computer system.

How to Use the GPS Clock

The Global positioning System (GPS) is a US military system primarily intended for global navigation. The system provides highly accurate positioning information for navigation. The GPS system consists of a constellation of 24 orbiting satellites. Each satellite has an on-board atomic clock, which is ideal for providing a highly accurate timing reference. This article discusses how the GPS clock can be used to provide an accurate timing reference for computers and computer networks.

The GPS system is often used for computer timing applications, such as NTP time servers and accurate timing references.GPS TimeGPS time is continuously broadcast by the GPS system. Time is referenced to UTC (Universal Coordinated Time), which is the same worldwide and does not vary with time zones. GPS timing information can be received with relatively low-cost equipment, such as a GPS receiver and antenna. The GPS signal is very weak low-power radio signal. The signal has two designated frequencies, L1 and L2. Frequency, L1, is the civilian GPS frequency transmitted at 1575.42 MHz. The signal travels in a straight line and can pass through clouds, glass and plastics but is blocked by objects such as metal and brickwork. The ideal location for a GPS antenna is therefore on rooftop with a good view of the sky.

Often, antenna installation on the side of a building or in a window can provide a good enough view of the sky to give adequate results. GPS ClockThe GPS system provides a free-to-air time synchronisation service; there are no on-going set-up or subscription charges. Many computer systems utilise the GPS clock as an accurate timing reference. Highly accurate NTP server systems use the GPS clock as an external reference to synchronise Network Time Protocol servers. Typically, a GPS receiver can provide timing information to within a few nanoseconds of UTC. The accuracy achieved with a GPS receiver is generally more than required for most computer network timing applications.GPS Receiver OutputThe GPS receiver constantly outputs position and timing information. Generally, information is transmitted to and from the receiver via a RS232 serial interface.

Standard GPS interface protocols exist, the most common being NMEA. The NMEA protocol consists of a number of sentences, or character strings, transmitted at 4800 bits per second. Contained within each character string is accurate time and position information. Due to the latencies involved in serial communication, the NMEA sentences are not generally accurate enough to provide a timing reference. Therefore a pulse per second (PPS) output is utilised. A PPS output is an accurate pulse output each second that is aligned to the start of each second. The PPS output can be fed into a control line on the RS232 interface to provide a hardware interrupt input for accurate timing. Often the DCD RS232 line is utilised as a PPS input from the GPS receiver. The PPS output combined with NMEA timing and positioning information provides a highly accurate timing reference for computers.

GPS AntennasThe GPS antenna is a signal amplifier that boosts the GPS signal for transmission along a cable, usually coax, to the receiver. GPS antennas used for timing purposes are generally dome-shaped pole mounting devices for permanent installation in a static location. Typically, the GPS antenna is fairly small in size, measuring less than 900 mm in diameterGPS CablingThe cable distance that can be utilised by a GPS antenna and receiver depends on the amplification of the GPS antenna and the quality of coax used in the installation. A typical GPS antenna may have a gain of 35 db. Low-quality coax such as RG58 has an attenuation of 0.64 db/m at 1575 MHz. Therefore, a cable run of 55m can be obtained using RG58 cable. Higher quality coax, such as LMR400, an unaided cable run of 200m can be achieved. However, very high quality coax can be expensive. A good compromise is LMR200 cable, which can be run unaided to 80m. Longer distances can be achieved with the aid of GPS amplifiers, which amplify the GPS signal still further, to increase cable distance.

Microsoft Logs on to Google Complaint, to Alter Vista

MICROSOFT agreed to make changes to its Windows Vista operating system in response to a complaint by Google that a feature of Vista is anticompetitive, lawyers involved in the case said. The settlement, reached in recent days by state prosecutors, the Justice Department and Microsoft, averted the prospect of litigation over a complaint by Google that Vista had been designed to frustrate computer users who want to use software other than Microsoft's to search through files on their hard drives.

Google had made its complaint confidentially as part of the consent decree proceedings set up to monitor Microsoft for any anticompetitive conduct after it settled a landmark antitrust lawsuit five years ago that had been brought by the states and the Clinton administration. The federal government and the states were planning to file a joint status report by midnight in the consent decree proceedings that outlined the changes Microsoft would be making to Vista. State and federal lawyers were exchanging drafts of the report. They said they had reached agreement on a remedy, al- though there was still some disagreement over the report's language.

The disagreement reflected tensions between the Justice Department, which initially sided with Microsoft in the dispute, and some of the states, which have supported Goog1e and advocated a more aggressive stance. Google has sought to keep a low profile in the dispute, in part because the Federal Trade Commission has recently opened a preliminary antitrust investigation into Google's proposed $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick, an online advertising company. Lawyers involved in the proceeding said the changes to Vista would allow consumers to decide which desktop search program they want to use, and that selecting software from Google or some other company would no longer slow down the computer as it does now. They said that as part of the settlement, Microsoft would let Vista users know how to change their desktop search program. But the settlement would not require Microsoft to make all the changes that Google had sought. Google maintained that its desktop search program was slowed by an equivalent feature that is built into Vista.

When the Google and Microsoft search programs run simultaneously, their indexing programs slow the operating system considerably, Google contends. As a result, Google has said that Vista violated Microsoft's 2002 antitrust settlement, which prohibits Microsoft from designing operating systems that limit the choices of consumers.

Track Calls and Sms on your Windows Mobile Phone

Spb Phone Suite is designed to enhance your PDA with new features, missing in the phone side of standard Microsoft Windows Mobile 5. Once installed, it'll add phone profiles, missed call notifications, unread SMS notifications, call filtering, reject and reply with SMS, photo-dialing, photos in call log, automatic profile and these are just a few things to name!

To start with, you will discover a powerful Today plug-in where you can see the most frequently used options, such as photo-dialing (called "photo speed dials"), counters for missed calls and SMS messages, profile manager, call filtering mode switcher, and other phone related controls and indicators. You will see all important phone related data at one glance and access any option with just one tap. Fine, isn't it? But let's cut to the chase.

One of the best in Spb Phone Suite and "most wanted" in Windows Mobile functions is profiles. Phone profiles allow customization of ring, alarm tones and volumes (Normal, Silent, Loud), as well as the settings for Bluetooth, WiFi and backlight. As it is with any other option in Spb Phone Suite, profiles can be customized with just a tap or two. There are also automatic profiles that get triggered on some events automatically; this includes such profiles as Headset, Car, Meeting, and Cradle. Now you don't have to worry about triggering the silent mode for scheduled meetings. You can also set a profile to activate for a certain time interval. If you'd like to make your own custom profile in addition to the default ones, the program provide you with this opportunity. Any profile can be changed in a couple of taps from the Today screen.

The photo-dialing option allows you to add a photo avatar to a contact in order to dial a contact with just one tap. To add an avatar, you need to go to the settings dialog or simply tap and hold on the dialer area. Spb Phone Suite lets you use 14 photo-dialing avatars on the Today plug-in. If there are no photos for a contact, you can choose a default avatar from the inbuilt collection.

Other interesting features include "Reject and Send SMS" option, which is useful when you are not able to answer an incoming call. You can drop it in three taps with an SMS message containing a predefined text. Besides, there is "Call Filtering" that will help you create whitelists ("pre-approved" contacts list) and blacklists. With this option in place, your PDA can accept all calls, accept all calls except those from the blacklist, accept only whitelist contacts, or ignore all. Isn't it cool or what? What's more, you can set up wildcards (masks) for numbers from blacklists and whitelists and an ability to change the filter from the Today screen.

If you think the above mentioned features are something your PDA is missing and wish you had them, then you are invited to download an evaluation copy of Spb Phone Suite. You can test it free of charge to see its possibilities and benefits. Download now!

Using free Web Page Templates

Using free Web Page Templates
Templates are used to make the website look and feel consistent. All websites are built using templates and many website authoring tools and packages include templates. Here we will look at the templates that are available and go on to make web pages using these templates.
Template Types
Templates are created by designers using various toolsBusiness Management Articles, and some
i.e. FrontPage templates may require the hosting server to support FrontPage
Extensions. Therefore my advice for beginners is to avoid templates of this type
and use only plain HTML templates. Some of the types you will see
are:
  • HTML-----------Use this one if you are a beginner
  • Flash
  • Dreamweaver
  • Frontpage
  • Frames
  • No Frames------This may may not be plain HTML

Most Websites offer themed templates like:

  • kids
  • business
  • computers
  • music
  • Internet
There is nothing to be wary of here just choose the appropriate theme for your Website.

Learning basic HTML

Learning HTML does not have to be difficult! Here are some great free tips and tools to help an Internet novice get started building their Internet empire.
Ok, no getting around it, you've got to learn some HTML! You dont have to be great at it, but you really do need the basics. Even if you choose to write and format everything in Word and use PDF's for your ebooks, white papers, articles and the like. You will still need to be able to change headlines on your website, create or change thank you and sales pages, and add things quickly to your website.
There is a wonderful membership website that I once enjoyed. The site is filled with Internet Entrepreneurs who are successfully running an internet business. There are a series of detailed interviews discussing how each of them got to be successful. Without exception, every single business owner said you have got to do your own website. The number one regret by those who hired others was the money they spent on web designers. They all learned HTML in the end.
Now I am not saying that you will be stuck building your own websites forever and ever in fact, I encourage everyone to have "propellerheads" on their team. Its just that even when others are building the sites for you, you will still want to be able to gain access and do some minor changing of copy, colors, font sizes and the like.
HTML is the language of websites. You use HTML to make your fonts large, change colors...
Start a new paragraph, insert a picture
I am not the best source to teach you. However, Annabella is! She has a wonderful website where I learned HTML. Its located at:
Once you get through Annabellas site here is a handy HTML reference guide:
Here is one more great learning site:
www.utoronto.ca/webdocs/HTMLdocs/NewHTML/htmlindex.html
There are other languages that have been created after HTML. Java, php, and others. However, you will find that for most needs, a bit of HTML is all you need. Anything more complex is best handled by your propellerhead, unless you have plans to really master this area of web design.
At some point you will need an HTML editor. This is a handy tool that lets you see what it is you have created. Lets take a quick look at the most popular ones.
Microsoft FrontPage® is very popular. It has a lot of great functionality allowing you to build a site from scratch. Its a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor that lets you graphically design your web pages. Its one of the easier ones to learn. Though you will still spend a week or two banging your head trying to figure it all out (assuming you are a beginner). One of the things I like about it is the ability to split the screen and see the HTML code along with what the web page looks like.
Dreamweaver is supposed to be the best. Its the high end program that does everything but the dishes with regards to website design. The learning curve is high. And frankly, if you arent going to be building sites right along, its expensive.
There are website builders out there that take all the pain out of building websites. You provide the copy and the graphics, and they manage the rest. The one we like at the moment is XSitePro. It is relatively easy, quick and inexpensive as these things go. They also dont appear to leave a footprint something that the search engines look for to see if your sites are mass-produced.
Check out our resource page at
www.BizRecipes.com for this resource along with our many, many favorite things.
I have used a little free HTML editor that is quite delightful.
You can download it at: www.evrsoft.com
Its called 1st Page 2000 and we used it for several years before moving to FrontPage®. I always like to include a free tool wherever possible for those who must be extra careful with their dollars.
What can I say? You just have to sit down in front of your computer and do it. This is one of those skills that you will have forever. And you will be very glad you learned it.

The History of Canon

Established in 1933 by Goro Yoshida and Saburo Uchida, Canon began as company called Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory. In the company’s beginnings, their major goal was to develop a 35mm camera. In 1934, the Kwanon camera was released yet it never actually hit the marketplace.

Due to their inability to develop a lens of their own, the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory used one from Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, the predecessor company of Nikon Corporation. Three years following the initial start up of the company, the Hansa Canon was released in 1936 to the public. The following year, Canon as we know it today was founded.

Nowadays, Canon makes cameras, printers, copiers and many other office products and their most profitable area involves the sale of digital copiers for offices. It’s funny because most people think of their cameras before their office products, but numbers don’t lie!
Besides its current financial strongholds, Canon is still venturing out into new avenues all the time. They are currently forging ahead into the digital display field and have since bought the shares Toshiba had in a joint venture for the manufacture of flat panel television screens.

Did You Know
- Canon makes and supplies the print engines used in many Hewlett-Packard products, specifically the LaserJet laser printers so often raved about.

- The company name, Canon, was chosen because it was so similar to the name in Japanese of their debut product, the Kwanon.

- Canon is currently working on rear-projection displays.

Even companies that have been around many years can still grow and change with the times. So far, Canon has been very successful at doing just that.

The History of Dell

Michael Dell, in 1984 founded Dell in order to directly serve their customers with computers that meet their needs. The company was called PC’s Limited and he was still a student at University of Texas at the time. The following year, Dell came out with their very first computer called the Turbo, which had an eight-megahertz processor. The major goal was to produce personal computer systems that were IBM compatible and were produced or entirely stock parts.
What set the company apart was not just its consumer-oriented focus but also its allowance for people to customize their computers during the ordering process. Because each computer was individually assembled, this was possible.
The company grossed 73 million dollars in the first year. The company went public in 1988 offering shares for $8.50 a piece.
The first Dell laptop made its debut in 1991 and by 1993, it became one of the top five computer companies in the world. By 1995, those $8.50 shares were worth $100. The progress of the business was rapid and in 1997, Dell had shipped its ten millionth system.
In 1996, Dell began selling their products through their website and three years later they took over Compaq .
Jumping forward a bit, in 2003, Dell introduced their first Dell printers for the public, including those intended for the average consumer and businesses. Dell printers are known for being versatile and easy to use, however a recent development has brought skepticism to the company when Lexmark began working with them whom modified their cartridges so that they don’t work with Dell printers.
However, Dell has a long track record with customer satisfaction, at the very least in regards to their computer products.

Hp Introduces New Inkjet Cartridge Packaging

HP inkjet cartridges are to get a new colour coded look to assist customers in choosing the product most suited to their requirements.

From the summer of 2007, most new HP consumer printers will be introduced with multiple inkjet cartridge offerings that are designed to provide customers with options that better meet their printing needs. In addition, the new cartridge options will deliver value by offering low purchase prices to customers who print a little, and lower cost-per-page to customers who print a lot.

In conjunction with these new offerings, HP is rolling out a new colour-coded packaging system across its entire inkjet cartridge portfolio. Three colour-coded categories – standard (blue), value (green) and specialty (red) – will allow customers to walk into a retail store or log on to hp.com and quickly and easily scan their options to find the right cartridge that offers the best value for their printing needs. Examples of the new cartridge look can be found under the individual printer models at www.cartcon.co.uk/products/Inkjet_Cartridges/Hewlett-Packard.All three categories will be available throughout the range. For the majority of new HP inkjet printers, the inkjet cartridge options will be:
"Standard" cartridges (blue packaging), which have a lower purchase price, are designed for customers who print a small number of pages on a weekly or monthly basis. HP will introduce an increasing number of standard cartridge offerings in the sub £10 price range for those customers who still want access to high-quality printing, but don't want to pay a lot at the point of purchase.
"Value" cartridges (green packaging), which are designed for customers with higher volume printing needs, offer a lower cost per page compared to standard cartridges. This line will include new high-yield "XL" cartridges that provide customers approximately 30-45 percent savings on a cost-per-page basis, print up to three times more pages, and require fewer cartridge replacements compared to standard cartridges. Customers can easily identify the new value option by looking for the green packaging and the letters "XL" next to their cartridge number. "XL" presumably stands for extra large although with all cartridge manufacturers reducing the capacity of their cartridges this is probably of little comfort to the consumer.
"Specialty" cartridges (red packaging), which offer additional performance features compared to HP's standard ink formulations, are ideal for customers with special applications and printing jobs, such as professional-quality photographs.Hopefully once these changes are fully implemented and feed into the marketplace, cartridge buying for HP inkjet printers will become an easier task.

Compact Flash Card : Faster Speeds, More Storage

Compact Flash card (CF) is a type of a data storage device, especially useful for portable electronic devices. It can be used directly in a CF card slot with an adapter. It makes use of flash memory. Based on physical features, there are two types of Flashcards: Type I (3.3mm thick) and the thicker Type II (CF2) cards (5mm thick). First produced by SanDisk in 1994, Compact Flash card is among the first and the oldest and also the most successful brands and is now used for a variety of devices which includes laptops, portable audio recorders and desktop computers and cameras.Flash memory devices consume very less power and yet have good transfer speeds. They can also be switched from one system to another. They are also designed to adjust to very rapid changes in temperature or in voltage. The storage capacity of a Compact Flash card ranges from 128 MB to about 64 GB. However, 256 MB and 2 GB are the most popular choices in Europe. Flash memory has a specific quality which allows a section of its memory cells to get erased in a single 'flash', very much reminiscent of a camera flash function. This reminds one of the ease with which erasure of data can be carried out, freeing space for recording new data onto it. Flash memory being non-volatile and solid state, can be electrically erased and rewritten. Flash memory allows multiple memory locations to be erased or written in one programming operation. It can thus operate at much higher read-access speeds. Better shock resistance than hard disks is another of its useful feature. Features as these make these cards much more preferable over the others such as battery-powered devices. A limitation of this card is that being easily rewritable memory, it can be overwritten without warning leading to loss of data. System failure, power fluctuations, corruption caused by hardware crash or software malfunctions are the other limitations. Flash memory stores one bit of information in an array of transistors, called 'cells'. Compact flash cards are built on the basis of the type of logic gate used in each storage cell and are thus of two types: NOR flash and NAND flash. Recently however, some flash memory devices called multi-level cell devices, can store more than one bit per cell. NOR flash cell has two gates: the Control Gate and the Floating Gate. NAND Flash has a different mechanism: tunnel injection for writing and tunnel release for erasing. The market demand today is tilting towards the lower-priced NAND flash.

Common Uses of Usb Pen Drive

Small enough to hook onto a keychain, USB pen drive emulates a small disk drive and allows data to be transferred easily from one device to another. The way it works is very simple. It also works very fast. Since it is a relatively newer device, manufacturers are launching it with added capabilities and higher storage power. Some of the purposes for which it can be used are discussed below.
To transport personal data:
The commonest use of USB pen drive is to transport or store personal files such as documents, pictures and video. One can also store medical alert information for emergency use or as preparation against disaster.
Repairing computer:
Successful usage of USB pen drive has been noticed in the PC repaid field as a means to transfer recovery and antivirus software to infected PCs. It also allows a portion of the host machine's data to be archived in it in case of emergency.
System administrators’ helper:
System and network administrators find USB pen drive highly handy to load them with configuration information and software used for system maintenance, troubleshooting, and recovery. Such use of this portable device makes it popular among them.
As an application carrier:
USB pen drives are used to carry applications that run on the host computer without the necessity of installation. U3, backed by pen drive vendors, offers an API to pen drive-specific functions. Portableapps, a free and open-source software, has also been developed to allow U3-like functionality on non-U3 drives. airWRX is also an application framework that runs from a pen drive and turns its PC host and other nearby PCs into a multi-screen, web-like work environment. As audio players A number of companies make solid state digital audio players in a small form factor, essentially producing pen drives with sound output and a simple user interface. The MP3 playback function is the most popular addition to USB pen drive. Some of them also have LCD display for track browsing and audio input jack and a rechargeable battery
